An arena, 24 tributes, and only ever one victor, Welcome to the Hunger Games.

Meet 16-year-old, Katniss Everdeen. Katniss lives in District 12, goes hunting with her best friend Gale, loves her sister Prim, and puts food on her family’s table every day with joy. But today is solemn. Today is far from normal. Today is the Reaping. An extreme turn of events happens when an unexpected name is drawn and read, sending agony through the hearts of many. Katniss has learnt to always be prepared for the worst, as her share of gruelling affairs doesn’t seem to end. She finds herself on a stand, looking into the burning sun, when a voice booms, “Let the 74th annual hunger games…BEGIN!”

But all doesn’t end there. Even more chaos appears, starting with a secret organisation…

My favourite part in this book is when Katniss first goes to the Capitol. With all of its preposterous and bizarre fashions, she is startled and reacts with resistance, but soon learns how to avoid their ways. I liked this part because I found it really funny how she finds out about their ridiculous fashions and strange behaviours.

My favourite character is Effie Trinket because she always has everything scheduled and loves to be herself. She is also really supportive, but at time she can be a bit silly, which makes me laugh.

Overall, I loved reading The Hunger Games collection, and I lay awake in bed at night thinking about what could happen next after every book I read. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good adventure and action story and is able to read a thicker book.

If you enjoyed reading The Hunger Games| Catching Fire| Mockingjay| The Ballad of Songs and Snakes, you might also like these other dystopian reads on my blog:

Sunrise on the Reaping: A gripping prequel (Haymitch’s story, 50th Hunger Games) in the Hunger Games Series.

1984: A powerful dystopian novel that explores what it means to be a human in a society built on fear.

Animal Farm: A powerful political satire that uses a simple farm story to show how power can lead to corruption and inequality.

The Giver | Gathering Blue | Messenger | Son: A thought-provoking dystopian series. Each book has a different main character and takes place in different communities, but they are all connected across the series.
