Holes

Holes is a brilliant, extremely funny, and enthralling book to read. Louis Sachar makes sure that you are kept entertained every step of the way, while also making you feel every emotion within all of the characters. It feels as if you’re in the book, witnessing everything!

This book is about what happens to Stanley when he gets sent to Camp Green Lake (thanks to his no-good, rotten, pig-stealing great-great-grand-father!), and it all starts like this…

Stanley is a boy who is made fun of because of his weight and is bullied by one of his classmates. He feels sad and disappointed with life, but then an unfortunate turn of events happens and it changes his life forever. He gets sent to Camp Green Lake, where he finds dark secrets about the Warden, makes his first friend, and  just about manages to survive.

My favourite character in this book is Zero (Hector Zeroni) because at the very start of the book he is just assumed to not have anything going on in his mind, but towards the end we find out how intelligent he really is. I like him because he was also a great friend to Stanley and stuck with him through thick and thin. My favourite part is when Zero asks Stanley to teach him the alphabet, which strengthens their bond with each other.

Holes teaches us that you only have one life, so how do you choose to spend it? It includes topics on real-life issues such as racism and homelessness, which is really inspiring. This experience help Stanley realise who he was and what to do with his life.

I  think Louis Sacher deserves a round of applause! I loved this book and I am sure you will too. I recommend this book to Y3 and above. With that, I say: read Holes!
